What

Improve the overall quality of operations on a construction site.

Depending on how well project stakeholders understand the use of digital technologies for a construction project, they can take advantage of BIM 360 to improve quality.

Who

Everyone involved in a construction project, including the owner, architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, and planners.

How

On a construction site, quality improvement is a long-term process that depends partly on the stakeholders’ knowledge of digital technology. Although this gradual process includes several steps, improvement can be seen in the first stages of a project.

It all starts with digitizing documents so that they can be accessed at the construction site.

Using a mobile app that works offline, an operator can review, mark up, annotate, and interact with the latest version of documents. The documents can include models, PDF plans, and technical instructions. Access to data on a site is described here and here.

Users can then interact with field data in two different ways:

  •    A reactive approach, in which you create tasks, make observations, or record issues matching observations made on a construction site:

This approach is described here.

  • A proactive approach, in which you implement optimization and processes for quality improvement. To bring valuable data from the construction site to BIM 360, this approach involves forms, checklists, daily logs, a construction diary, RFIs, and submittals.

The methods can be mixed. The mixed workflow is shown here.

You can analyze this data and publish multiple reports, as well as graphs and histograms, on customized dashboards to monitor field progress.

Predictive analysis tools based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms help you anticipate the development of a project and define risk areas. You can identify trends by crossing information on multiple projects.

Why

BIM 360 helps with the digitization of construction site documents and contributes to the quality of all operations in the field.

Whatever the level of digitization of a project, or whether it uses a BIM model, data collection workflows can improve the quality of the project.

What next

Using Autodesk Forge, connect the BIM 360 platform to third-party tools and apps to extend on-site data collection.
