File Menu

The File menu contains commands to load, import, and save data. It also provides presets to optimize the scene. All file-related import and export settings are located in the VRED preferences.

New

Creates a new, empty scene. The current scene closes.

Open

Opens files. A dialog box opens where you can select one or more files to open.

Add

Opens the file browser where you can select a file to add to the current scene. The file is added to the scenegraph as a child of the selected node. If there is no node selected in the scene graph, the objects are added as children of the root node. All objects of any added file are grouped in a group node. Imported files are marked green in the scene graph.

When merging projects, viewpoints are preserved.

Save

Saves the current scene in a file using a supported VRED file format.

  • VRED Essentials Project Binary: .vpe

  • VRED Project Binary: .vpb

  • VRED Project File: .vpf

To write other file types, use File » Export.

Save As

Saves the file. The file browser opens where you can select the location, file type, and name of the file. If no file ending is entered, the file is saved in the VRED native file type VPB.

By default, VRED supports writing the following file types:

  • VRED Essentials Project Binary: .vpe

  • VRED Project Binary: .vpb

  • VRED Project File: .vpf

To write other file types, choose File » Export.

VRED supports the storage of ICC color profiles in project data to ensure consistency during the workflow and between devices used regarding color management. Storing color profiles guarantees the colors visible on your workstation are the same as on your private computer.

Save Selected
Saves the current selection in a file using a supported VRED file format.
Publish
Publishes a VRED project within a single file with validity start and expiry date; this scene cannot be loaded out of the specified date range.
Save Package
Saves a VRED project but textures are not inline; a subfolder is created on execution where all project contained texture files take place.
Open Recent
Opens recently opened or modified files from a submenu; clear removes all entries.
Open Examples
Opens the file browser with the examples folder opened.
Import

With the import function, more file types and meta information can be added to the scene.

  • Rendering Meta Data: Images rendered with VRED (.png, .jpg, .tif) contain Scene settings embedded as meta data in the renderinRendering Meta Datag. These settings are applied to the loaded scene.

  • CAD: Supported file formats: .apf, .asm, .catpart, .catproduct, .cgr, .dlv, .dlv3, .dlv4, .dwg, .dxf, .exp, .g, .iam, .iges, .igs, .ipt, .jt, .mdl, .model, .neu, .prt, .session, .sldasm, .sldprt, .step, .stp, .wire
  • Cosmo Binary: Cosmo3D/Optimizer Geometry .csb, Deltagen Geometry .rtx, Deltagen Animations .wrl, Deltagen Variants .xml

  • PLM XML: Imports product structure files with .plmxml file format.

  • Render Jobs: Imports jobs from Render module to the current scene. (XML Render Queue Description .xml)

  • Sequences: Imports arrangements from Sequencer module to the current scene (XML Sequencer Description .xml).

A sequence setup for the sequencer module can be added to the scene.

  • Variants: Imports variants from Variants and Vsets module to the current scene (XML Variant Description .xml). A variant setup for the Variants and VariantSets module can be added to the scene.

Export

The export function allows the export of the scene geometry, images, sequencer batches, and variants.

  • Scene: Allows exportation of the scene in different data types. The default setting is *.vpb. Other supported types are as follows:

    • VRML Geometry: .vrml .wrl

    • Wavefront Geometry: .obj

    • VRED Essentials Project Binary: .vpe

    • FBX Scene: .fbx

    • Maya® ASCII: .ma

    • Maya® Binary: .mb

    • Maya® Scene: .ma .mb .wire

    • FHS Geometry: .fhs

    • PovRay: .pov

    • OpenSG ASCII Geometry: .osg

    • OpenSG Binary Geometry: .osb

    • ProENGINEER Render Geometry: .slp

    • Python Script: .py

    • StereoLithography Geometry: .stl .stla .stlb

    • VRED Project Binary: .vpb

    • VRED Project File: .vpf

  • Selected: Allows exportation of the selection in different data types. The default setting is *..

  • Switched Geometry: Exports switched geometry data (*.osb).

  • CubeImages: A dialog box appears where the location for saving the CubeImage can be selected. CubeImage render settings can be set in the Preferences Editor.

  • Render Jobs: Exports jobs from Render module to the current scene. (XML Render Queue Description .xml)

  • Snapshot: Exports a snapshot of the viewport to the snapshot folder located in preferences.

  • Sequences: All sequences set in the sequencer module are in a separate xml file.

  • Variants: All variants and variants sets are in a separate xml file.

Add VRML Animation

VRML animations can be added to the scene. Precondition is that the animated objects exist in the file.

Optimize Scene

Optimizes the scene to improve performance. Rendering speeds up while memory usage lowers after optimization. The three available algorithms are as follows:

  • Optimize Geometries: Optimizes the geometry structure.

  • Optimize/Share Geometries: Optimizes the geometry structure and tries to share duplicate geometries.

  • Merge/Optimize/Share Geometries: Changes the scene graph structure to achieve maximum optimization.

Quit

Quits the application.
