Vault Server-Side Components

The following is a list of Vault server-side components that can be virtualized in agreement with the Virtual Installation Guidelines. This list applies to all editions of Vault (Basic, Workgroup & Professional).

Best Practices

Vault Backups

There are multiple methods that can be used to back up a Vault server. It is recommended to work with the virtualization vendor to understand the services they offer which offers the best backup and recovery process for your needs.

Performance

Poor performance is often experienced with virtual environments which do not have enough system resources for Vault to work properly. Refer to the Vault system requirements as a good place to start understanding what is recommended in non-virtual environments.

FAQs

  • Is it officially supported to do a backup from Autodesk® Vault Server via VMWare® Snapshot or other techniques to clone (virtual) machines?
    • The only supported method of backing up a Vault server is using the backup command in the ADMS Console.
    • Please use the methods described in the Vault online help to backup and restore a Vault.
  • Trying to moving your virtual server that is hosting Vault from VMWare to Hyper-v host
    • This is something that is not tested and is not supported.  Please take a full Vault backup through the ADMS Console by Selecting Tools > Backup and restore before you make any changes to the server.

Should make a new virtual computer, install Vault Server and Vault updates. Then backup the production vault and restore Vault backup to the new server. This will minimize down time
