Stylus tilt helps your stylus create a stroke with the directionality you expect and controls how the stroke of the brush is drawn.

Stylus tilt is found in Brush Properties in the Advanced tab and when set, it helps your stylus create a stroke with the directionality you expect.

So what does tilt do? It controls how the stroke of the brush is drawn. If you want to control the tilt of your stylus, use Scaling Percentage and Controlled by stylus tilt.

  1. In Brush Properties, tap the Advanced tab.

  2. Scroll down to Stamp, tap Rotation > Rotation Dynamics, then select Controlled by stylus tilt. Without this set, the tilt of your stylus won’t have any effect on the strokes of your brush.

  3. Tap-drag the Scaling Percentage slider to control the elongating of the brush stamp in conjunction with the tilt of your stylus.

    • With a low Scaling Percentage, you have to tilt your stylus a lot more to achieve the tilting effect.
    • With a higher value, you don’t have to tilt your stylus as much to reach a similar effect.

If your stylus has an eraser, Scaling Percentage will apply to both the eraser and stylus tip.

Setting stylus tilt in SketchBook Pro Mobile

If you have an iPad Pro and the new Apple Pencil, you've probably figured out pressure-sensitivity. There's also the Tilt options to look at. It helps you get the most out of SketchBook and your Apple Pencil. However, you may not know what these options do or where to find them.

Let's start with explaining that stylus tilt is supported for Apple Pencil on iPad Pro and Wacom Cintiq. For SketchBook to recognize your Apple Pencil or Wacom Cintiq Hybrid, tap Info Settings icon Preference and then under Pen Connection, select your stylus.

DANGER: No matter which stylus you are using, ensure it is paired with the device (in the case of the Apple Pencil and your iPad Pro or SketchBook through the Preferences. Both your stylus and device should also be fully charged. Also. remember that not every brush has tilt options.

Setting palm rejection

One of the biggest complaints from people using a stylus/pen is the unwanted strokes created by the side of their hand or finger accidentally touching the screen. The way to avoid this is by changing to Pen Mode. This makes the app listen only to the stylus. While you're drawing, turn on Pen Mode to make SketchBook ignore your palm or finger touching the canvas.

For iOS

Tap Info Settings icon Preference and then under Pen Setting, enable Pen Mode.

To turn off palm rejections, select Info Settings icon Pen Mode.

For Android

Exclusive to Samsung S Pen devices.

  1. Tap Info Settings icon Preference and pair your stylus with SketchBook.

  2. Return to Info Settings icon and select Pen Mode.

  3. Tap ON to activate Pen Mode for palm rejection.

  4. Check Enable Multi-touch Gestures if you want to manipulate the canvas, hide the UI, etc. with multi-touch gestures.

Setting tilt options

Exclusive to the tablet version.

You can set tilt scaling for any brush; however, it is only available for Apple Pencil (on iPad Pro) or Wacom Cintiq Hybrid. These are styluses with built-in tilt functionality. Scaling creates the tilt effect when drawing. It controls the elongation of the brush stamp. The higher the value, the more elongated the stamp.

DANGER: Since the other styluses listed under Pen Connection don't yet have tilt functionality, the Tilt Scaling brush property isn't available for them.

By default, Scaling goes from a minimum value of 100% (meaning that the brush stamp won't change no matter how much you tilt your stylus)

to 400% (meaning the brush stamp is elongated and enlarged to a maximum of 4 times its original size when you really tilt your stylus).

  1. Tap Brush Library palette and then Brush Library slider to open Brush Properties.

  2. Scroll to the bottom. Below Rotation, you will see Tilt.

  3. Drag the Scaling slider to control the elongating of the brush stamp in conjunction with the tilt of your stylus.

    • With a higher value, you don't have to tilt your stylus as much to reach a similar effect.
