Building—Coordination—Combining native BIM files in the preconstruction phase

What

In this article, you will learn how to import files into a common viewer to perform clash detection, interference checking, and model aggregation. Performing these useful activities in the preconstruction phase reduces errors and delays in later phases.

Because Navisworks Manage reads native Revit files, you can easily move data between these applications. Use Navisworks to combine Revit files across a project and incorporate other common file formats as well.

At the end of this article, you will know how to export files from Revit and import them to Navisworks Manage to perform basic checks.

Who

Drafters, BIM managers, Project managers.

How

1. In the Revit toolbar, select Add Ins > External Tools > Navisworks to export the model in NWC format.

2. Open the model in Navisworks, combining it with other NWC files coming from different disciplines

3. Perform operations such as:

  • Virtual navigation in the model. Go to Item Tools > Navigate.
  • Clash detection. Go to Item Tools > Tools.
  • TimeLiner simulation. Go to Item Tools > TimeLiner.

The process is shown in this video:

Why

Coordinating information among models is crucial to ensure model quality and optimize development during the construction phase.

By supporting direct import of Revit files and other formats, Navisworks is the ideal platform for performing basic and advanced checks.

What next?

In addition to the basic workflow described in this article, here are more complex Revit to Navisworks workflows:

Revit and Navisworks Manage are both part of the Autodesk AEC Collection.
