Upgrade Information

Some new and changed features of Revit 2019 result in certain behaviors for upgraded models. Review this information before upgrading your models.

Levels in 3D views

When you upgrade a model, existing 3D views do not display levels. Use the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog to make them visible.

View templates that control the visibility of levels will update with levels turned off. However, if a view template applies to both a 2D view (such as a section or an elevation) and a 3D view, level visibility is turned on, and levels display in 3D views.

See About Levels in 3D Views and Work with Levels in 3D Views.

Material appearances

New appearance assets are available for use with materials in models and families. When you upgrade a model or a family, no changes are made to its materials. Views that use the Realistic visual style or the Ray Trace visual style should look the same as before the upgrade with respect to how materials are represented. When you render a view, the rendered image should look the same as before the upgrade.

The new appearance assets use physically-based definitions, optimized for use with the Autodesk rendering engine. To take advantage of the improved visual representations, edit each material to replace the legacy appearance asset with the new appearance asset.

The legacy assets and the new assets both reside in the Appearance Library. Use Search to find appearance assets with similar names. Legacy assets are marked with the icon. New assets do not have the icon. For example, in the following thumbnails for Walnut appearance assets, the first image does not have the icon; it represents the new asset. The second image displays the icon; it represents a legacy asset.

Note: Not all legacy appearance assets have corresponding new appearance assets.
As a best practice, update materials to use the new appearance assets for improved rendering. See About Appearance Assets and Replace an Asset of a Material.
