Curtain walls are made up of mullions and panels. To add a door to a curtain wall, you must replace the curtain wall panel with a door panel.

First, load curtain wall door families into the project so they can be swapped for standard curtain wall panels. On the Insert tab, click Load Family. Navigate to the location where the curtain wall doors content is kept. In this example, the curtain wall doors are in the same folder as the other door families. Select the desired families and click Load. If your project already has curtain wall doors loaded, you can skip this step.

Curtain wall doors are not placed like a door in a standard wall. Notice that when the Door command is active, you cannot use the Type Selector to switch to a curtain wall door. Also, when the cursor is over the curtain wall in the canvas, you are not able to place a door.

Instead, select the Modify tool and position the cursor over the edge of the curtain wall panel that will be replaced by the door. Press Tab until the panel is highlighted, and then click to select the panel. If the panel is pinned, indicating it is part of the curtain wall type definition, un-pin the panel.

Click the Type Selector and select a curtain wall door. The panel will be replaced with the curtain wall door family. You may need to change the detail level of the view to see the door handles.

Next, remove the mullion at the base of the door. Position the cursor near the mullion, press Tab to highlight it, and click to select it. Un-pin the mullion if needed and then press Delete to remove the mullion. The door will be resized to reach the base of the wall.

The curtain wall door is automatically sized to match the panel being replaced. You may need to add and position additional curtain grids to get the correct size door. Finally, change the surrounding panels as required back to typical glazed panels.

Add curtain wall doors where needed in your project by swapping out typical curtain wall panels for specialized door panels.
