Render a sequence of frames interactively

When rendering an animation, you can render a sequence of frames without having to batch render. For convenience, you can also add these images to the Render View for preview.

  1. Set the frames that you want to render in the Render Settings window, Common tab.

In the Frame/Animation ext drop-down list, select any of the options with a #; for example: name.#.ext. The Start frame and End frame attributes in the Frame Range section become active, where you can set your frame range.

  2. Select Render > Render Sequence > from the Rendering menu set to open the Render Sequence options window.

The title bar of the Render Sequence window indicates the frames that will be rendered; for example: Frame:1-10.

Tip: You can also select Render > Render Sequence > from the Render View menu or from the Render View marking menu.

    Render from a specific camera

    • Select the camera from the Current Camera drop-down list.

Only images rendered from this camera are produced.

Any camera you create in the scene is automatically added to this list.

      Tip:

If the drop-down list appears inactive, ensure that you have disabled All Render-Enabled Cameras.

Render all layers and/or all cameras

    • Under Render Options, enable All Render-Enabled Layers and All Render-Enabled Cameras. If these options are disabled, then only the active layer and the camera selected from the Current Camera drop-down list are rendered.

    Save images to Render View

    • To save these images to the Render View, enable Add to Render View.

Enable Add All Layers to add rendered images for all layers and Add All Cameras to add rendered images for all cameras. If these options are disabled, then only the active layer and active camera are saved to the Render View.

  3. (Optional) Select an output file location for your images.

By default, your rendered images are saved to your project's images folder. To set an alternate location, navigate to the folder via the Alternate Output File Location attribute.

Your customized folder location is only saved for the current Maya session, and is cleared after you open a new or existing scene, or after you exit and restart Maya.

    Note:

Previously, in Maya 2017, rendered images were saved to your project's images/tmp folder by default.

To verify the default path, see the Render Settings window, Common tab.

  4. Click Render Sequence to start rendering, and save the images to the output folder and to the Render View.

Messages appear in the Script Editor, indicating the progress of your render.

If images were saved to the Render View, use the slider at the bottom of the Render View window to scroll through the rendered image sequence.

Render Region

Rendering a region of your scene is supported with this feature.

Marquee select the area that you want to render in the Render View, then enable Render Region in the Render Sequence options window, and click Render Sequence.

Render Sequence using the current settings

To render a sequence using the last saved settings, you can click from the Render View toolbar or the Rendering shelf.

Ignore local overrides during sequence rendering

Local render overrides are ignored during batch rendering. When rendering a sequence, you have the option of ignoring or respecting local overrides in your render. Enable or disable the Ignore Local Overrides option.

This option applies to both images saved to the Render View, as well as saved image files.

Render AOV's

You can use the Arnold for Maya renderer to render AOV's and save the images to disk. All AOVs listed in AOVs tab of the Render Settings window are rendered to disk.

The Render Options that you have selected in the Render Sequence window are respected. For example, if you enable Render All Layers but disable Render All Cameras, then the AOVs for each of your render layers are rendered and saved to disk, but only the current camera is rendered.

You can save one AOV to the Render View. Select it from the Render View AOV drop-down list in the AOVs tab of the Render Settings window.

The Render View Options that you have selected in the Render Sequence window are also respected. For example, if you enable Add All Layers, then the AOV renders for each frame and for each layer are saved to the Render View.
