Create, open, or save a scene file

In Maya LT, you can save scenes with the .mlt format only. To export an FBX file, use File > Export All. (See also Export objects to a new file.) Your .mlt scene files cannot be read by any other application.

You can load .ma and .mb files in Maya LT, however any unsupported nodes are removed. For example, since file referencing is not supported in Maya LT, any referenced objects are automatically loaded into the scene when you open a file with file references.

Maya LT supports a maximum of two animation layers on top of the BaseAnimation. If you open or import a Maya file that contains more than two animation layers, or if importing more animation layers into your scene exceeds the maximum, Maya LT merges the animation and removes the layers.

To start a new, blank scene file

  1. Select File > New Scene.

You can select to always create new scenes with default content by choosing File > New Scene > and turning on Enable Default Scene in the New Scene Options.

To open an existing scene file

  1. Select File > Open Scene.

The Open dialog box appears, open in the scene folder of the current project.

    Note:

To open a file that was created in a earlier version of Maya LT, ensure the Ignore Version preference is turned on in the File/Projects preferences. See Files/Projects preferences.

To save the current scene file

  1. Do one of the following:
    • To save the scene with its current name, select File > Save Scene.
    • To save the scene with a new name, select File > Save Scene As.
    • To change how Maya LT saves the scene, select File > Save Scene > and set the Save Scene Options.
