I would like to share some nice tips and tricks about Model-Based Definition with you.

Get started with MBD
You already learned about the value of using Model-Based Definition (MBD) and want to get started as soon as possible? With this short notice, you get some nice information about how to create dimensions.

Some basics about how to create dimensions in 3D Annotation and Model-Based Definition
In Inventor, there are three different ways to create dimensions in 3D Annotation and Model-Based Definition.
1.    Promote Dimension
Take advantage of the full power of parametric design and re-use the parameters and tolerances of your 3D design in Model-Based Definition.

First set the tolerance in your parameter (Figure 1).

Show the model dimensions and promote them as MBD (Figure 2).

2.    Create a Dimension
If there are no model dimensions to promote, you can create them yourself as MBD (Figure 3).

3.    Dimension in Tolerance Feature
The created dimension is automatically linked to the model parameter if you define a shaft, slot, hole, or hole pattern with a Tolerance Feature (Figure 4).

Linking your parameter (incl. pre-defined tolerance) with MBD is important if you want to bring your part directly to CAM as a model on median tolerance.

Explore more options
Sometimes you need more options for your 3D Annotation dimensions in your model, e.g. Hide Dimension Value or create an Inspection Dimension (Figure 5).

Learn with this short Screencast how to get access to the same options as in drawing mode for MBD.

Summary
With these few tips, you can easily create advanced Model-Based Definition in Inventor.
