How to control a river or water embankment in InfraWorks

Issue:

A river or water area in Autodesk® InfraWorks™ creates a rough connection to the terrain when it is lowered.
You want to know how to better control the water integration into terrain, for example make the banks steeper.

Solution:

  • Without a bank the river simply triangulates to the closest TIN point which is why you get an inconsistent slope.  
  • ​With a bank you can control the horizontal offset and make it steeper with a narrower bank width - the slope would vary since you're only controlling the width - but it would be more consistent.
  • Create a small buffer for the river and use it as land area. This way the terrain gets much more detailed and the "closest TIN points" are creating a much smoother result:

  • For best control of the steepness of the slope better - you might want to make a component road with a simple component representing the water (e.g. use the Lane assembly and change the style to use the Water shader), and then you could control the grading on the side and also control the profile since it's unlikely to be flat:
