Create platforms in railway designs

Autodesk Support

What

The railway platform is an important part of any railway project. Autodesk solutions for railway design provide rule-based capabilities to design platform edges. Rules are based on the horizontal and vertical rail track geometry and the type of traveling rail.  The design of the platform is typically done by the railway designer. The platform design can be complemented with architectural features like shelters and benches. This is typically done by an architect.

Who

Railway engineers, Railway designers, Architects, Project managers, BIM coordinators, BIM managers.

How

The railway platform design workflow:

1. Design the platform edge based on the horizontal and vertical geometry of the rail track. While creating the platform edge, the horizontal and vertical offset is calculated based on rail-track geometry and the rail type (Simple/Heavy rail). This is especially important when you design a platform in a curved part of the rail track alignment.

2. To create a 3D platform model, apply a platform subassembly along the platform edge. You can create a single or double rail platform.

3. After you create the 3D model, generate the Final Design Surface from the 3D model (rail track and platform combined). Use a BIM 360 Docs workflow to share this data with the architect. In Revit, you can add other elements to the design.

4. Use Navisworks to make more (or all) of the Civil 3D model available in Revit. You can create an NWD file from the 3D model (Corridor solids) and reference it in Revit as a coordination model.

Why

Using Civil 3D and Revit for railway platform design supports both the railway designer and the architect. Each can work in their preferred environment. Revit supports creating a detailed construction model, where LOD depends on requirements.

What next
