Upgrade Revit Cloud Models

You can easily upgrade all your Revit cloud models in Document Management to the latest version of Revit, using the Project Admin module. Revit models uploaded directly from Document Management are not upgraded.

During the upgrade, project members can continue to access the project and view the models. However, any changes made to the project during this time are not saved because the project version itself is updated during this process.

The upgrade completion time can vary widely, depending on the number of models to be upgraded and the size of those models.

To upgrade your Revit cloud models:

  1. From the Project Admin module, click Document Management in the left panel.

  2. On the Services tab, select the Revit Cloud Model Upgrade secondary tab. A check begin immediately to determine if you have models available to upgrade.

  3. If you see the message Upgrade recommended, click Upgrade.

If you see a message indicating you need Revit Cloud Worksharing, contact your software or contract administrator to request access to Revit Cloud Worksharing, which you will need to proceed to the next step.

  4. Read the confirmation message and click Upgrade Revit cloud models to confirm your decision. You should now see a series of messages indicating the progress of the upgrade. You will also receive an email confirmation that the upgrade has started and may take some time.

  5. You will receive another email once the upgrade is complete. Click Review in that email to view the latest models in Document Management.

Note: When a project contains more than 2,500 Revit cloud models, the cloud upgrade tool is not available. Shared and consumed models are not counted as cloud models.

Test Upgrade Report

The Test Upgrade Report shows only Revit cloud models that contain errors or warnings after being upgraded. If there are no errors or warnings associated with a model, BIM 360 generates a message reading "Test upgrade complete - Cloud models in this project could be upgraded from Revit 20xx to Revit 20xx."

Publish Revit Models After Cloud Model Upgrade

Once your project is successfully upgraded to a new version, you should follow these additional steps to publish the models so your team can work with the new version:

  1. Open Revit.

  2. Switch to the Collaborate tab and click Manage Cloud Models.

  3. Select your project.

  4. Hover your cursor over the Revit model and click Publish Latest.

Tip: To quickly publish all models, click the Actions icon in the top right corner of the dialog and choose Publish All.
Important: If using Design Collaboration and managed sharing, after the models have been published your team should create and share packages in Design Collaboration based on the updated versions. Similarly, your team should only consume packages based on the upgraded versions. Use the compare tool in Document Management to help identify changes in the model.

Unable to Upgrade Revit Cloud Models

If there is a problem with the upgrade process for one or more models, you may receive a notification reading “Unable to upgrade Revit cloud models.”

To resolve this issue:

  1. Retry the upgrade at a later time.

  2. Download the individual model(s) to your local machine and perform a local upgrade.

    • If the local upgrade is successful, contact Autodesk Support to inform them that the local upgrade succeeded but the upgrade process in BIM 360 isn't working.
    • If the local upgrade is unsuccessful, use the information in the error message to correct any issues with the model(s). If a model fails to upgrade, all models in the project remain in the Revit release until the upgrade is successful. You can continue to work in the previous version of the models.
    • If the upgrade has not been completed within 48 hours, contact Autodesk Support.
