Choosing a collaboration workflow with BIM 360 Design

What

BIM 360 Design software offers BIM managers the flexibility of choosing a collaboration workflow that meets the needs of their organization.

Who

BIM managers, BIM coordinators.

How

Each time a Revit user shares a project file with dedicated sets, the project data appears in a folder as a new release. When a BIM manager shares these sets, the project data is automatically replicated in a shared area. Then, after another BIM manager reviews the sets, the project data can go in a consumed area for general access by team members.

BIM 360 Design offers BIM managers the choice of a fully controlled, highly trusted, or moderately trusted workflow.

 1. Fully controlled workflow

      a. A Revit user of Team A (in this example, the Architect team) publishes the project file sets.

      b. The BIM manager of Team A reviews and shares the sets in the Shared Project Data folder.

      c. The BIM manager of Team B (in this example, the Structure team) reviews the sets and places them in the Consumed folder.

      d. Team B Revit users can link their files to the sets in the Consumed folder.

 2. Highly trusted workflow

      a. All Revit users can link directly to project data in the source folders of other teams (they must be granted at least read access to these folders).

      b. All linked files update in real time without approval from a BIM manager.

 3. Moderately trusted workflow

      a. A Revit user of Team A (in this example, the Architect team) publishes the project file sets.

      b. The BIM Manager of Team A reviews and shares the sets in the Shared Project Data folder.

      c. Team B (in this example, the Structure team) Revit users can link their files to the sets in the Shared folder.

In this moderation workflow, the BIM manager of Team B does not have to review the sets or place them in the Consumed folder.

Why

Each organization needs to decide on the BIM process that works best for them. Several factors influence the choice of workflow. Among them are the scope of the project, the expertise of users, and the relationships between stakeholders. Of course, BIM managers should agree on a workflow at the beginning of a project to avoid problems.
