What

Efficiently create detailed engineering documentation for structural steel, such as layout drawings, details for steel connections, and accurate BOM schedules. Use an Autodesk Revit model with detailed steel design.

Create a structural steel layout drawing. For a review of detailed drawings, see Building—Structure—Detailed steel design documentation—Part 1 (detailed drawings).

Who

Structural designers, structural engineers, steel detailers, steel fabricators.

How

Create your BIM model, including detailed steel design. Set up sheets, and then use dimensions and tags to add the needed information.

Workflow steps

  1. Create a sheet and drag the needed view to the sheet.
  2. Place dimensions for grids, beam system lines, and other objects.
  3. Use tags to add labels to the elements. Tags can specify section and material information. You can load tags, specify default tags for categories, and customize tags to meet your requirements.
Tip: Use Beam Annotations to automate labeling.

The following video shows how to create layout drawings.

Why

Loss of information between the project definition and fabrication detail phases is a significant challenge for structural engineers.
This workflow facilitates communication between the project and fabrication phases, reducing information loss and errors.

What's next

Part 3 of this series focuses on creating steel BOM schedules.
