How to download Revit Content

Issue:

Where to find/get from Revit content and family libraries or extra Revit content, specific to a certain region, industry, or manufacturer

Causes:

  • Revit 2021.1 and later versions:

    Limited content is installed with Revit, and families can be loaded on demand with the cloud based Load Autodesk Family command.

  • Revit 2020 and earlier versions:

    Revit content (templates and families) associated with the annual release are installed by default with the program (to the C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT <Version> folder). However, there are some cases where it is necessary to manually download the content.

Solution:

Load Autodesk Family

With Revit 2021.1 and later versions, you no longer need to download all the family content locally. Instead, you can use the Load Autodesk Family command to load default library families from the cloud on demand.

If you preferred to keep a local copy of the content, you can still download the library.

Note: For Revit 2022 and newer, This content can also be downloaded through the Autodesk Accounts page. 
All Products and Services> Revit>View Details> Under Available Downloads, Click Libraries.

More info:

  • The content pages have both Revit and Revit LT content. Scroll down to find the LT content.

  • The downloaded content will be extracted to the default content locations: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT <Version>

  • The folder C:\ProgramData may be hidden. Unhide following these steps: View hidden files and folders in Windows.

  • If the extraction fails, run it one more time in Administrator mode (Right-click on the file and select Run as Administrator).

Templates

  • Basic project and family templates are expected to be installed automatically (2021 and later versions). If these are missing, see the following article for instructions on how to install manually: How to install Revit project and family templates.

More Troubleshooting

More Content:

Note: Revit RFA, RFT files created in older versions of Revit can be opened and used in newer versions. These files will be upgraded when opened in a newer version of Revit. Revit file are not backward-compatible, so files created in newer versions of Revit cannot be opened with older versions.
