Issue:

Users reported that crashing or performance issues may occur due to outdated graphics drivers. What is the best process to update a graphics driver for Fusion?

Solution:

Manually download the updated driver

  1. Determine what graphics card manufacturer is installed. To do this: Run C:\Windows\System32\dxdiag.exe
  2. Look on the display tab or select Save All Information and review the resulting text file to see who the manufacturer of the graphics card is. It will be helpful to note the model as well.
  3. Go to the manufacturer's website for the installed graphics card and update to the latest version driver available from the manufacturer's website.
    • Intel
      • Use the Automatic Detection tool on the website to install the correct drivers.
    • AMD
    • NVIDIA
  4. Use either the Scan Your PC option or filling out the drop-down menus with your graphics card's information.
  5. Download the driver.
  6. Install the driver.

Alternatively, Download the NVIDIA App to be notified of updates or receive them automatically

  1. Download and install the appropriate NVIDIA App for your graphics card and device usage:
    • Gamers/Creators - Includes Game Ready and Studio drivers for GeForce series GPUs.
    • Professionals/Workstation - Includes NVIDIA Recommended, Leading Edge and Conservative drivers for RTX Workstation GPUs.
  2. Within the NVIDIA App, click the Driver section in the left-side navigation.

Select Driver option on the left side list

  1. Select the appropriate driver using the dropdown to the right, just below where it says LOG IN or your account name
    • Game Ready drivers prioritize launch-day performance of the latest games, patches, and DLC.
    • Studio Drivers prioritize reliability for creative workflows and applications.
    • Leading Edge drivers target the latest features and code for software development and evaluation.
    • Conservative drivers prioritize stability and security in a predictable environment, with changes and new features being introduced less-frequently.
    • NVIDIA Recommended drivers strike a balance between Leading Edge and Conservative drivers, with the latest certified enhancements and security mitigations.
    • Note: Fusion is generally compatible with any of the above driver types, but is only validated with Professional/Workstation drivers.
  2. Select Download, and follow the on-screen installation instructions. It is generally recommended to restart the device after updating drivers.

Note: Contact your computer or GPU manufacturer for support regarding any issues updating drivers.

If there are no updates available for your graphics card

Driver update detection from Microsoft, AMD, Intel, or Nvidia may declare that your drivers are up-to-date, even if a newer version is available to download from their websites.

This is often due to your device having a custom version of the driver by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the device – usually a laptop or other portable device. These customizations may include alternate visual, performance, or power-saving profiles and optimizations for the device’s hardware configuration beyond those provided by default from the graphics chipmakers’ universal drivers.

By default, these custom drivers will not be replaced or overwritten by a universal driver even if the replacement is a newer version – it is generally the responsibility of the OEM to continue providing custom driver updates.

Intel graphics driver installer

If you wish to force an upgrade a newer universal driver, you may do so at your own risk by uninstalling the existing driver and restarting before installing the latest version, and restarting once more. Do not use Windows Device Manager to uninstall, as this may not reliably remove all associated files or applications.

Note: Many laptops have dual graphics – both a dedicated and an integrated chipset. It is possible for each graphics device to utilize a different driver (AMD, Intel, and/or Nvidia). Take note of which device driver Fusion is alerting you about, and be careful to uninstall only that which is out of date.

Note: Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) can also be used with AMD and Nvidia graphics drivers, in addition to Intel.
