Cannot input architectural units in AutoCAD

Issue:

When using a draw or modify command to input a distance in architectural units, AutoCAD based software returns an error and the input value fails.

Causes:

The default template for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, "acad.dwt" and "acadlt.dwt" respectively have decimal units applied as a default drawing unit format. If one attempts to input a value such as 12'4" in a decimal based drawing, AutoCAD will not accept that as input. Instead one will need to input that value as 148 (in inches), without the " for inches.
In an architectural format one can input the value using the same format as a decimal based file or one can enter in architectural feet and inches.

Solution:

Use the UNITS (Command) to change from a decimal format to an architectural format.
