Issue:

3ds Max or Maya load slowly or freeze when launching from SSD drive under Windows 10, 8.1 or 7

Causes:

The PC's BIOS (basic input/output system) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) settings may be reading the SSD (solid state drive) in IDE (integrated drive electronics) mode, instead of AHCI (advanced host controller interface) mode. AHCI mode is much faster and is preferred for SSDs.

Solution:

Fixing this issue requires that you are comfortable making settings to your computer's BIOS or UEFI settings, which reside in a chip on your PC's motherboard. The BIOS loads a set of low-level boot-up instructions for your PC hardware first, then the Windows operating system loads. Setting improper instructions in your BIOS/UEFI may make your PC not boot and load Windows successfully, so you may prefer asking an experienced computer technician for advice or help beforehand.

Note: BIOS/UEFI instructions and display screens vary from motherboard to motherboard. To access your PC's BIOS/UEFI, consult your PC manual, or do an online search for your particular PC or motherboard type and look for "how to access the BIOS/EUFI." Usually, when you first boot your PC, you'll see a message saying to press a specific key, such as Delete or F9, to access your PC/s BIOS/UEFI settings. The information in this link can help you access the settings for your particular machine. How to change from IDE to AHCI Mode in the BIOS/UEFI
  1. In Windows, click the Start Button and type cmd
  2. Right-click the result and select Run as administrator
  3. Type the following command and press ENTER: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
  4. If this command does not work for you, try bcdedit /set safeboot minimal
  5. Restart the computer and enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (the key to press varies between PC systems).
  6. Change the SATA Operation mode to AHCI, instead of IDE or RAID (again, the language varies).
  7. Save the changes and exit Setup. Windows will boot to Safe Mode automatically.
  8. Right-click the Windows Start Menu once more. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
  9. Type the following command and press ENTER: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
  10. Note: if you had to try the alternate command in Step #4, you will likely need to do so here also: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot
  11. Reboot once more and Windows will restart with the AHCI drivers enabled.
