Export a Project to IFC

Save a project as an IFC file for use with an IFC-certified application that does not use the RVT file format.

  1. Load the IFC mapping file that you want to use for the export to IFC.

See Load and Modify an IFC Mapping File. You can also use this procedure to modify the mapping file or to map non-standard Revit families to IFC containers.

  2. Click Export (IFC).
  3. In the Export IFC dialog, for Save In, navigate to the target folder for the IFC file.
  4. For Files of Type, select the desired file type:
    • IFC 2x2 (*.ifc): This is the older IFC 2x2 schema, using the Coordination View model definition.
    • IFC 2x3 (*.ifc): This is the default certified version of export, and the latest version generally supported by other systems, based on the IFC 2x3 schema and the Coordination View model view definition.
    • IFC Coordination View 2.0 (*.ifc): This is the format based on the IFC 2x3 schema and the newer Coordination View 2.0 model view definition.
    • IFC BCA ePlan Check (*.ifc): This is a certified variant of IFC 2x2 used for submitting files to the Singapore BCA ePlan Check Server. When exporting to this file type, you should make sure that all room-bounding elements are selected.
    • IFC GSA 2010 (*.ifc): This is the latest format specified by the U.S. Government Services Administration, based on the IFC 2x3 schema.
  5. Select export options:
    • Current view only allows you to export elements that are visible in the current view. Visible elements include those that are hidden by hidden line or shaded mode, any underlays in the view, and elements that are cropped from view by the crop region. Elements temporarily hidden using temporary hide/isolate will not be exported. Categories marked as Not Exported in the IFC Export Classes dialog will not be exported. See Load and Modify an IFC Mapping File.
Note: Rooms are not visible in 3D views, so you cannot use the Current view only option to export rooms from a 3D view. To export rooms, select this option when exporting a plan view or a section view, or clear this option when exporting a 3D view.
    • Split walls and columns by story allows you to divide multi-level walls and columns by level. When you use this option, Revit cuts the walls and columns by each level that is defined as a building story. (See Level Instance Properties.) For elements whose base level is a non-building story level, Revit exports them using the next lower building story as their base level, with an appropriate offset.

Revit only exports levels for which the Building Story parameter is enabled, unless no levels are defined as building stories. In that case, Revit exports all levels that are used as base levels for walls and columns.

    • Export base quantities includes base quantities for model elements in the export data. Base quantities are generated from model geometry to reflect actual physical quantity values, independent of measurement rules or methods.
    • Include Space Boundaries exports no space boundaries, first level space boundaries, or second level space boundaries.

A first level space boundary is defined from inside the space, disregarding any change in building element or space on the other side. A second level space boundary considers the material of the building element and the adjacent spaces behind it, providing thermal properties, for example.

  6. For File Name, enter a name for the IFC file.
  7. Click Save.
The resulting IFC file and a log file for the export process are placed in the target folder.
