What is Maya LT?

Autodesk® Maya LT™ 2014 is a 3D modeling and animation software tool designed for indie and mobile game developers. Based on the award-winning Autodesk® Maya® software, Maya LT offers users a familiar UI and workflow at an affordable price. Maya LT enables indie developers to model, light, and animate 3D characters, props, and environments for pc, web, and mobile games. With detailed videos and documentation, a streamlined UI, a Microsoft® DirectX® 11 software enabled viewport, high-to-low resolution texture baking, and a polygon reduction tool, Maya LT is an ideal choice for artists of various skill levels.

How can users license Maya LT?

Users may choose to purchase a perpetual or term-based license of Maya LT, either through the Autodesk Store or through a local reseller. Check our reseller locator online to find a reseller near you.

Maya LT was designed to help meet the needs of indie and mobile game developers, not to be integrated into an existing Maya pipeline. Technology

What is the interoperability between Maya and Maya LT?

Maya LT was not designed as an extension of a pipeline, or to integrate into existing Maya pipelines. File sharing is possible through the Autodesk® FBX® asset exchange format, with certain limitations based on the feature set capabilities of Maya LT. When sharing assets created in Maya LT with Maya, assets must be exported using the FBX format. When sharing assets created in Maya with Maya LT, modification of asset properties will be limited to the feature set capabilities of Maya LT.

What are the modeling capabilities of Maya LT?

The modeling tool set of Maya LT has full parity with Maya and has the powerful NEX modeling toolset. The primary difference in 3D models will be at the time of export for game engine: Maya LT enables FBX export up to 25,000 polygons.

What animation features does Maya LT support?

Maya LT has basic animation tools: keyframing, f-curve editor, dope sheet, and the Autodesk® HumanIK® rig. Maya LT does not include advanced features: camera sequencer, animation layers, Trax nonlinear animation, grease pencil.

Does Maya LT support character rigging?

Maya LT supports HumanIK animation rig and biped skeleton generation, basic constraints (e.g.: parent, point, and orient), skinning and blendshapes. Maya LT does not support expressions, set-driven key, or advanced deformations.

Does Maya LT support rendering?

No, Maya LT does not support single or multi-frame rendering. Maya LT does support creating animated sprites with transparency from the high fidelity viewport. Maya LT does support a limited resolution preview of objects from the camera view prior to texture baking.

Does Maya LT support creating animated sprites?

Yes, Maya LT does support creating animated sprites with transparency from the viewport such as high-quality features like anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, and shadows.

What support does Maya LT offer for material creation?

Maya LT supports Phong, DirectX 11, and ShaderFX materials. ShaderFX is a material with a node-based shader editor to help create complex real-time/hardware shaders which can be output to certain shading languages. Maya LT supports a DirectX 11 viewport with tessellation and displacement.

Does Maya LT support texture baking?

Maya LT supports the Autodesk® Turtle Plug-In for Autodesk Maya texture baking plug-in. With Turtle, users can bake light information into texture maps or vertex maps, and bake occlusion and normal maps from detailed models to low-polygon models.

Does Maya LT support dynamics or simulation, often used for visual effects?

No, Maya LT does not support dynamics or simulation features used in the creation of visual effects.

Does Maya LT have an SDK to enable creating custom plugins?

There is currently no SDK available for Maya LT, and Maya LT does not currently support third party plug-ins.

Does Maya LT support scripting?

Maya LT does not support scripting (Maya Embedded Language (MEL) or Python® scripting language).

What platforms does Maya LT support?

Maya LT is supported on the following operating systems: 

  • Microsoft® Windows® 7 Professional edition and Windows® 8 Professional edition operating system.
  • Apple® Mac OS® X 10.7.x and 10.8.x operating system.

What file formats does Maya LT support?

  • Maya LT import file formats: Maya (.ma, .mb), .obj, .fbx, .ai, .eps.
  • Maya LT has its own file format: .mlt. The .mlt format enables users to save in-progress or highly detailed models with no polygon limit.
  • Maya LT can export assets in the FBX format up to 25,000 polygons per FBX file.
  • Maya LT can import common texture formats: .bmp, .png, .dds, .exr, .tga, .tiff.

Will there be a 32-bit executable available for Maya LT?

No. Like other Autodesk 3D animation software, Maya LT will only be available as a 64-bit executable to help provide a better user experience.


Installation, configuration, and licensing

Will Maya LT customers be able to upgrade or cross-grade their Maya LT license to Maya or other Autodesk 3D animation software packages?

There are currently no upgrade or cross-grade options available for Maya LT.

Is there a network/floating license option available for Maya LT?

No, Maya LT does not support network licenses.

Can Maya LT be installed alongside Maya or other Autodesk 3D animation products?

Yes, Maya LT can be installed on the same system as other Autodesk products. Maya LT has its own separate preferences folder.

Is there a subscription offering for Maya LT?

What is the Online License Transfer system and how does it work?

Online License Transfer provides a flexible and convenient web-based mechanism for customers with Standalone licenses to transfer their licenses to different machines without using a dongle.  This basic functionality is available without additional charge and there is no limit on the number of transfers. Access the Online License Transfer system log-in using a web interface where you can then de-activate your software license on your current computer before re-activating it on a different one. 

Note: The license transfer utility (LTU) used as part of the Online License Transfer requires an Internet connection, and an Autodesk user ID and password, available from https://registeronce.autodesk.com.


Compatibility and interoperability

What game engines can Maya LT work with?

With Maya LT users can export assets in the FBX format which is supported by a variety of game engines. Users can also download the FBX SDK, which enables developers to integrate FBX support into their game engine of choice.
