Combining network license files

Issue:

You want to manage multiple Autodesk product licenses using FLEXlm®.

Solution

If you have more than one Autodesk software application that uses FLEXlm® for network licensing, you can either create a separate service for each software license or you can combine the license files into one main network license file. Combining the network licenses will allow you to run a single FLEXlm service to serve licenses to client workstations running various Autodesk products.

It is strongly recommend that you use the Network License Manager (LMTOOLS), which is shipped with the most recently released Autodesk product. The Network License Manager is backwards-compatible, so it can also serve older Autodesk product licenses.

Autodesk 2007 products, such as 3ds Max® 9, require FLEXlm version 10.8 or later. If you are currently using an older version of the Network License Manager, you will need to upgrade to LMTOOLS 10.8 or later.

Note: If you prefer, Autodesk can create a combined network license file for you. To request a combined network license file, contact Software Product Registration and Authorization.

To create a combined network license file

  1. Using Microsoft® Notepad, open each of the relevant license files. They will be in either the LIC or DAT file format.
Note: You should only open network license files with Notepad. Other applications, such as Microsoft® Word, may interfere with the ASCII file format, possibly adding unwanted formatting information and thus corrupting your license.
  2. Select the most recent file and save this file under a new name. You will use this file as the master file, adding the contents from each of the other license files into it.
  3. In each of the license files, copy the license text from the word "VENDOR" to the end of the file and paste each the copied data into the main file.
  4. Once you have copied all of the license data into the main file, save the new license file to the License folder on the FLEXlm server (by default, C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Network License Manager\License).
Note: Make sure that your network license file was not saved as a TXT file. Network license files must have either an .lic or a .dat file extension.

The following is an example of several different license files combined into a single network license file:

Once all of the licenses have been combined into one main network license file, you will need to restart the server and configure it to use the combined license file.

To configure the FLEXlm server to use the combined network license

  1. Click Start menu > Programs > Autodesk > Network License Manger > LMTOOLS.
  2. On the Start/Stop/Reread tab, select the Force Server Shutdown check box, and then click Stop Server.

  1. Click the Config Services tab, and do the following:
    1. Enter a value in the Service Name field. You can choose to use the default name - FlexLm Service 1 - or enter a new name.
    2. In the Path to the lmgrd.exe File field, enter the path manually or browse to the location of the lmgrd.exe file. By default the lmgrd.exe file is located in the following location:

      C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\lmgrd.exe
    3. In the Path to the license file field, enter the path manually or browse to the license file (for example, C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Network License Manager\License).
    4. In the Path to the Debug Log File field, enter a path to create a new debug log file or browse to the location of the debug log file.
    5. Select the Use Services and Start Server at Power Up check box.
    6. Click Save Service.

  1. Click the Start/Stop/Reread tab, and then click Start Server. A Server Start Successful message should appear at the bottom of the dialog box.

  1. Exit LMTOOLS.

The FLEXlm server is now started and ready to serve licenses to all of the Autodesk software products included in the combined network license file.
