Overview

Overview

Installing a product on a single computer (with a stand-alone license) involves using the Autodesk installer and a single serial number and product key.

  • Get Ready — Prepare your system, download product, get language packs, if required, review documentation, and locate the serial number & product key
  • Configure & Install — Select your install type, accept license agreement, specify your license type, enter your serial number and product key and select the products to install
  • Activate & Register — Activate and register your product over the Internet or manually using an activation code.

If you purchased a multi-seat stand-alone license, you can follow the installation process above for each computer. For more details, see Multi-Seat Stand-alone (MSS) Licensing.

Prepare System

For a smooth and successful installation of your Autodesk product, watch the video walkthrough or follow the steps below:

Prepare Your System

Admin permissions, Microsoft .NET requirement, turning off virus check

2:29

Check System Requirements

Confirm that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for that product by visiting System Requirements.

Note: If you're running Windows, make sure to download/install the version that matches your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit).

Find Certified Hardware

Find the certified and recommended computer hardware for the products or suites that you are planning to install.

Confirm Administrator Permissions

If you're installing on your personal computer, you can skip this step.

If you're not installing on your own personal computer, you'll need to confirm that you have Local User Administrative permissions to install software. For Windows systems, check this by going to:

Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage User Accounts

Note: Domain User Administrative permissions may not be sufficient to install Autodesk software on your computer. Contact your system administrator if you don't have Local User Administrative permissions.

Install Microsoft .NET Framework

Many Autodesk products require the Microsoft .NET Framework to be installed:

Microsoft .NET 3.5 – for Windows 8

Microsoft .NET 4.0 – for Windows 7/Vista

Empty your TEMP folder

To open the TEMP folder, type %TEMP% in the address bar of Windows Explorer and press Enter.

Note: If your product installation fails and you decide to open a Support Request with Autodesk Product Support, we would need to review install logs created in your TEMP folder during this product installation attempt.

Install System Updates & Exit Applications

Install all system updates and reboot your computer. The final step before beginning installation is to exit all applications that are currently running on your system. Some applications, for example Microsoft Outlook, can interfere with the installation process.

Note: Anti-virus programs can sometimes interfere with the installation process. Temporarily disabling your anti-virus program may help if you're having trouble with your installation.

Disable the User Account Control (UAC)

Instructions for turning off UAC:

Download Product or Insert Media

Download your software and click the setup executable file to launch the product installer.

The location where your download is saved appears at the beginning of the download process. The default location is typically, System > Autodesk > ProductName_Version as seen in the image below.

If you have a boxed product, insert the physical media (DVD/CD or USB) into your computer. The product folder should appear on your desktop when inserted.

Note: If you're running Windows, make sure to download/install the version that matches your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit).

Review Documentation

Review the documentation links found on the bottom left corner of the main installation screen.

  • Installation & Licensing – installation types, licensing guides and other popular support resources

  • System Requirements – minimum requirements for the product

  • Readme File – contains important late-breaking information that may not have made it into the final documentation.

Subscription customers can install different or additional languages. It is best to download the language pack before starting the installation.

Multiple Language Support

Finding, downloading & installing language packs

3:53

Login to Subscription Center and select “Get Your Upgrade”. From there navigate to the product you are looking for and locate the particular language pack you need and download it.

Note: Some products may not have multiple languages available at the time of product release but additional language packs may be available later for Subscription customers.

Once the download is complete, launch the executable, pick the install button and let it extract itself to the default location. Once extracted, the language pack MSI file will be ready to add when you run the installer.

What is a Language Pack?

A language pack is a software module that can be added to an Autodesk product to change the language used throughout the user interface and the documentation. A single instance of the product software can support multiple languages by adding language packs. Each language pack is matched to a specific Autodesk product, and includes an installer. You must install the Autodesk product before installing a language pack. Each installed language pack creates a separate icon on the Windows Start menu, such as "Inventor - French (Francais)" that you can use to start the product in that language. Depending on your product, language packs may be available on the installation media or from a website.

A language pack installer provides an option to create a language pack deployment for a particular product. The language pack deployment can be installed on multiple computers, after the related product is installed, to add another language version.

Installation & Configuration

To install Autodesk software on a single computer, follow the steps below:

Note: Although the images show AutoCAD 2012 as an example, the steps apply to all current Autodesk products.

  1. Launch the Product Installer by double-clicking the setup.exe file located in the system folder for that product.

For digital products, the default location of the product installer is typically System > Autodesk > ProductName_Version_Language_OS as seen in the below image.

For physical media, this should appear on your desktop after inserting the USB or DVD into your computer.

  2. Click Install.

Note: You can change the Installer language by clicking the Installation Instructions drop down on the top right.

  3. Read the License and Services Agreement for your Country or Region. Select I Accept and then click Next.

  4. Select the license type you have purchased. For installing on a single computer, select Stand-Alone. Learn more about license types.

  5. Enter your Serial number and Product key and then click Next.

If you're installing a Free Product Trial (and don't have a serial number and product key), select I want to try the product for 30 days and click Next. Learn more about installing a free trial.

  6. The default configuration pre-selects the components to be installed with your product. To proceed with the default configuration and location (recommended) click Install.

To modify configuration settings, click the triangle in the product box window to open the configuration panel:

For many products, you can select an installation type, either Typical to accept the default configuration settings, or Custom to review the settings and decide whether to modify them. More information on the configuration settings for your product may exist in a product supplement to Installation Help. After you have configured the settings as required, click the triangle to close the configuration panel. The Installation path indicates the location where your Autodesk product will be installed.

Note: If you customize the Installation path, make sure it does not exceed 260 characters or you will receive an error during installation.

  7. In the install process, you can select the Product Language, which is the language for installed products. See Selecting the Product Language for more information.

  8. When the installation completes you'll see a list of the products that have been installed on your computer. Click Finish to close the installer.

The installation process is now complete! Learn how to Activate and Register Autodesk software.

Selecting the Installation Type

Here is some basic information to help you make the right selection.

  • Install is recommended for individual users or small groups. The key point is that you will repeat the installation process on each computer. This is the only valid installation type for a stand-alone license, but it can also be used with a multi-seat stand-alone or network license.
  • Create Deployment is recommended for network administrators, using either a multi-seat stand-alone or network license. In the deployment process, the installation is configured once, stored on the network, and then distributed efficiently to users' computers.

For more information on deployments, see Network Administration & Licensing.

  • Install Tools & Utilities is used to install tools and utilities related to your suite or product. If you have a network license for your Autodesk product, you will need to use this option to install the Network License Manager before any users can run the product. Consult the documentation for your suite or product to identify the available tools and utilities of interest.

Selecting the Language

NOTE: This topic does not apply to Autodesk products that provide each language version on separate media. For these products, you must specify the product language when purchasing, and cannot change it.

For some Autodesk products, such as AutoCAD, you can select the product language at the time of installation, using this drop-down menu on the installer:

Language Selection Menu

If the language you want is not on this menu, your available options vary by Autodesk product. Some products, such as Inventor, use language packs to support additional languages.

Conditions applicable to language selection:

  • Each suite installation uses a single language. If you need to install one or more products in a different language, that requires a separate installation.
  • All deployments must be in a single language. One administrative image can support deployments for different languages, but each deployment is for one language.
  • If you are installing multiple products and select a language that is not supported by some products, these products use a default language.
  • After you leave the Product Information page of the installer, the menu for selecting a language or adding a language pack is disabled. If you later decide to change the language or add a language pack, you cannot go back to the Product Information page and use the menu. Instead, you must cancel the installation, start the installer again, and then make the correct language selection on the Product Information page.

Activate & Register

Activation is the process of verifying the serial number and product key of an Autodesk product, and licensing it to run on a specific computer. Activation cannot occur if the serial number and product key combination is invalid, or if the computer is disconnected from the Internet. Autodesk software can run in Trial mode for an extended period, usually 30 days, before requiring activation.

Troubleshooting Activation Issues

Registering Software

Registration may be optional or required, depending on the software you're using. If required, you are prompted to create an Autodesk User ID associated with an individual or company account during installation and activation. If registration is optional, you can choose to postpone it, and you will be reminded periodically to register.

To Register your Autodesk Software: Visit registeronece.autodesk.com and follow the on-screen instructions.

Finding the Request Code

When you activate your product manually (offline method), a request code is sent — along with your serial number, product key, and registration information — to Autodesk in order to create an activation code. This activation code is then used to activate your product.

If you activate your product online, this process occurs automatically; however, there may be cases when you will need to provide your request code, such as for manual (offline) activations.

Note: A valid serial number and product key are required in order to generate a request code.

There are two main locations where you can find your request code:

Product Activation Wizard

To find your request code:

  1. Launch the product you want to activate and the Activation Wizard will appear. Click Activate.

  2. As long as you entered a Serial Number and Product Key during installation, your request code will appear at the top of the Activation Options screen as shown below.

Note: The request code shown below is for example only and will not work if used.

If you don't see a request code, you may be running your product in trial mode and will need to enter a valid serial number and product key, which you receive after purchasing a full product license.

Registration Information

When you install your Autodesk product using a valid serial number and product key, an HTML file containing your request code and registration information will be saved on your computer, typically in one of the following locations:

For Windows Systems:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Adlm\ProductNameVersion_USRegInfo.html

For Mac Systems:
/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ProductNameVersion_USRegInfo.html

Note: ProductNameVersion will vary depending on your product, operating system, release year and language. For instance, AutoCAD LT 2013 for Windows (English) will appear as ACDLT2013en, while AutoCAD for Mac 2013 (English) will appear as ACDMAC2013en.

Activation FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about activating Autodesk products:

What is Product Activation?

Activation is the process of verifying the serial number and product key of an Autodesk product, and licensing it to run on a specific computer. Activation is initiated the first time the product is launched and if you are connected to the Internet, the process is completed automatically.

Why is product activation necessary?

Product activation is an important part of licensing Autodesk software. The process protects both your rights as a consumer and our rights as a software developer by verifying that you have installed a genuine Autodesk product and that it has not been activated on more computers than are allowed by your Software License Agreement.

Is product activation the same as product registration?

No. They are different, but connected, procedures. Product activation is a process that verifies your product serial number and product key and licenses it to run on your machine. Product registration is a separate process where you create an Autodesk ID associated with an individual or company account and which prevents unauthorized use of your product by another person. Learn how to activate and register Autodesk software.

Do I need to be online to activate Autodesk software?

No. However, we recommend that you do activate your software over the Internet because it is the easiest and fastest method. Manual activation can be done offline.

How long does product activation take?

Online activation takes only a few minutes to complete, while manual (offline) activation can take up to two business days.

What happens if I don't activate my product?

Most Autodesk products have a "grace period" of 30 days, during which you can use the software without activation. However, after this period ends the software will stop working until you activate it.

Will reinstalling the software provide a new grace period?

No. Only one initial grace period is supported per product, per computer.

What if I use more than one computer to do my work? How many activations are permitted per license?

We understand you may need to use the software when you are away from your usual work location—for example, while working from home. Therefore, most Stand Alone Autodesk products can be installed and activated on a second computer owned or controlled by you (the software license owner). The software may only be used by you and only one of the two copies may be used at one time. Consult your Autodesk Software License Agreement for complete details about using the software on a second computer.

What if I get a new computer, can I still use the software?

Yes. Most Autodesk products (starting with 2010 releases) include a License Transfer Utility (LTU) that enables online transfer of stand-alone licenses from one machine to another. The LTU can be used to transfer your license to a temporary machine (for repairs or when working in the field) or when permanently switching to a new machine. For more information, see How to Transfer Stand-Alone Autodesk Licenses.

Will reformatting my hard drive have any impact on my software license?

Yes. Replacing or reconfiguring hardware on your computer can invalidate your Autodesk license, requiring you to reactivate it before you will be able to use it again. You can avoid this problem by using the LTU to transfer your license online before making any major system changes. For more information, see our Product Reactivation FAQ.

Does the activation process ever send data to Autodesk after I activate my product?

No. After you have finished the activation process, no data will be transmitted to Autodesk. The only time data would need to be resent, is if product reactivation is required.

When manually activating multiple software seats (licenses), do I need multiple activation codes?

Yes. Each software seat (except those managed with a network license server) requires a unique activation code. You cannot use an activation code from one machine on another machine.

I use a network license to manage my Autodesk software licenses. How does this affect product activation?

Product activation only applies to stand-alone and multi-seat stand-alone licenses for most Autodesk products and is not required for network licenses. However, selecting the wrong license type during installation (such as “Stand-Alone”) can prevent you from installing your network license on multiple computers.

Reactivation FAQ

Frequently asked questions about reactivation of Autodesk products.

What is the difference between activation and reactivation?

When a stand-alone Autodesk product is installed for the first time on a computer, the license must be activated for it to work beyond its trial period. Activation is accomplished by sending your serial number, a request code, and registration data to Autodesk via a secure Internet connection or email. That information is used to validate the license and to generate an activation code for that installation of the product.

Reactivation is required when the previous activation of a product is somehow invalidated on the computer. The license will attempt to silently and automatically reactivate. If it cannot automatically reactivate, or if automatic reactivation has happened too many times over a certain period of months, you will be prompted to manually reactivate the product. At that point, reactivation requires the same steps and information as initial activation of the product.

What can trigger a reactivation to occur?

The following activities can invalidate a license, resulting in a need for reactivation:

  • Significantly changing the primary boot disk
  • Changing too many hardware components at once (hard drive, graphics card, RAM, NIC, etc.)
  • Tampering with the activation services or the software license files
  • Modifying the system date or time properties on a computer that has a time-limited software license
  • Reinstalling your operating system
  • Using the License Transfer Utility to export a license from a computer and then trying to run that product on the same computer
  • Installing from a hard disk image, created using Ghost or another cloning software package, where the original Master Boot Record was included in the image.

What happens if I’ve reached my reactivation limit?

If you have exceeded the number of allowed automatic reactivations, you will need to contact Autodesk where you will be able to provide information to explain why additional activations are required.

How can I avoid reactivation issues when needing to change hardware on my computer?

To prevent a break in your product license when changing hardware, use the License Transfer Utility to export your license before making the change. After the hardware change, use the License Transfer Utility again to import the license file back to the machine.

For more information on Online License Transfer, refer to the solution, How to transfer (move) Stand-Alone Licenses.

Removing Products on Windows

If an attempt to install or uninstall an Autodesk® product failed to successfully complete it is strongly recommended that you clean your system by uninstalling all Autodesk products and supporting applications (add-ins, utilities, enablers, etc.) before attempting to reinstall the software.

Uninstalling

Removing peripherals, material libraries & products; Repair product

4:46

Before you begin

  • These procedures are intended to completely remove Autodesk products and related support files from your computer including customization files such as menus, AutoLISP, PGP files, etc. If you wish to preserve any existing customization, you must manually back up those files before executing the procedures that follow.
  • Before you starting uninstalling your Autodesk products, we recommend you restart your system to ensure that any pending Windows OS updates get applied first.

For most Windows-based Autodesk products, the process of uninstallation is handled through the Windows Control Panel:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, open the Control Panel.
  2. Select “Uninstall a program” (Windows 7/Windows Vista) or “Add or Remove Programs” (Windows XP).

Windows 7 / Window Vista

Windows XP

The first thing to note is that each Autodesk product is listed separately and must be uninstalled separately.

List of installed applications

Even though you may have installed all of the products in a suite in a single installation, each individual Autodesk product and related add-in, enabler, bonus pack, or other supporting application must be uninstalled separately.

Uninstall peripheral applications

If you're going to uninstall a product, you should uninstall the related peripheral applications before uninstalling the main application. For example: if you're going to uninstall 3DS Max Design, you should first uninstall the FBX add-in for 3DS Max Design. Uninstall this and any other related add-ins and then uninstall the main applications. This also applies to modules such as the VBA enabler, Subscription Advantage packs, and Autodesk material libraries.

Note: When uninstalling the Autodesk material libraries it’s important to remember that these libraries are shared across all Autodesk products and should not be removed unless you are removing all Autodesk products from the system.

When uninstalling the material libraries, it's best to uninstall from largest to smallest. Begin by uninstalling the medium resolution image library–assuming that library is installed on your system–followed by the base resolution image library, and then the Autodesk material library.

Uninstall Autodesk products

Once you have uninstalled all peripheral applications, you can begin uninstalling the main Autodesk products:

  1. Select the product to be uninstalled and click the “Uninstall/Change” link (Windows 7/Windows Vista) or the “Change/Remove” button (Windows XP).
  2. At this point, the Autodesk installer will open in maintenance mode offering you the options to: Add or Remove Features, Repair or Reinstall, or Uninstall the selected product.

AutoCAD 2013 installer in Maintenance Mode

  3. Click the Uninstall option and click Next to confirm that you want to remove the product from your computer (if you are prompted to remove shared files, click Yes to All).
  4. After the Uninstall is complete, click Finish to close the installer.

Repeat steps 1-3 for each Autodesk product to be uninstalled.

Note: The uninstall procedure for some Autodesk products may require you to restart the computer when the uninstall has completed. If this is the case, restart the computer as instructed, return to the Control Panel and continue removing any remaining Autodesk products.

Delete remaining Autodesk product files and folders

Warning: The following steps instruct you to delete folders at locations that would affect all installed Autodesk products. These steps assume you have previously uninstalled all Autodesk products and related peripherals and that it is safe to remove those folders.

  1. Using Windows Explorer, locate and delete the installation folder for each Autodesk product that was uninstalled in the previous procedures, e.g., "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2010" or "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2012".

  2. Delete the folder, "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared"
Note: These locations may be different if your OS is configured to store the Program Files folder on a drive other than C: or if you installed your Autodesk product to another drive and folder name.

  3. Delete the following user profile folders (substitute your login name for %username%):

    Windows 7/Windows Vista
    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk
    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk
    • C:\ProgramData\Autodesk

    Windows XP
    • C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\ Application Data\Autodesk
    • C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\autodesk

Windows 7 and Windows Vista: Depending on your system settings, Windows Explorer may not automatically display all the subfolders under the Users folder. If you cannot locate these folders by navigating to the folder, copy and paste the above folder locations into the Windows Explorer address bar.

Windows Explorer address bar

Delete remaining Autodesk product entries from the Windows registry

Warning: Improperly editing the Windows registry could render your operating system unusable. Microsoft provides a wealth of critical information that you need to know about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com/support.

Use the Microsoft® Registry Editor at your own risk and only after backing up the registry.

  1. Log on to the workstation as a member of the local Administrators group.
  2. Launch the Run dialog by typing [Windows key] + R (Windows 7/Windows Vista) or clicking Start > Run (Windows XP).
  3. In the Run dialog, enter REGEDIT in the “Open” edit field and click OK.
  4. In the Registry Editor, locate and delete the following subkeys:

    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Autodesk

Deleting a subkey in the Registry Editor

  1. Close the Registry Editor.
  2. Restart the computer.

Before reinstalling any Autodesk products

At this point, each of the previously installed Autodesk products—along with residual files, folders, and registry settings—should now be gone from the system and you are almost ready to start installing (or reinstalling) your Autodesk products. Before you begin, we recommend you perform the following tasks to help ensure a successful installation:

  1. Reboot your computer. Restarting your system before installation helps ensure that any pending Windows OS updates get appliedbefore you starting installing your Autodesk products.
  2. In Windows Explorer, delete the contents of your Windows Temp folder, but do not delete the Windows Temp folder itself. You can locate the Temp folder by entering %TEMP% in the Address bar of Windows Explorer.
  3. Close all running applications.
  4. Disable any virus-checking software running on your system. Virus-checking applications may block certain activities detected as suspicious, e.g., accessing the registry or adding/removing/updating DLL files, even though these activities are common when installing or removing programs. Not only can it slow down the installation process, but it can actually introduce corruption. So make sure that your virus checking software is turned off before you install, and make sure you turn it back on when you're complete.

Several anti-virus programs can be disabled by right-clicking its system tray icon and selecting Disable from the shortcut menu (for more information about disabling your anti-virus software, refer to the vendor of that software). In some cases, disabling the anti-virus application from the system tray may not be sufficient and it may be necessary to use the task manager to end the process for the anti-virus software that is still running.

To verify that an anti-virus program is not still running in the background:

  1. Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Delete].
  2. Click Task Manager.
  3. On the Processes tab of the Task Manager, select the process for the anti-virus program and then click “End Process”.

You are now ready to install your Autodesk products on your computer.

License Management

A stand-alone license authorizes a single user to use the specified Autodesk product. The product can be installed on more than one computer, but multiple instances of the same product cannot be running concurrently on different computers.

Stand-alone licensing allows you to use your Autodesk product in trial mode for a specified period, usually 30 days, from the first time you start the product. For a product suite, the trial period countdown begins when the first product is started, and it applies to all Autodesk products in the suite. You can activate your license at any time before or after the trial period expires.

The stand-alone licensing process (including multi-seat stand-alone) creates a license file, known as a trusted storage file, and a minor change to the computer's file system. The license file and related changes remain on your computer when you uninstall your product. If you reinstall your Autodesk product on the same computer, the license remains valid, without the need for reactivation.

The trusted storage file has a format such as adskflex_00691b00_tsf.data. It contains all activated stand-alone licenses on the computer. If this file is deleted, all licenses must be reactivated. The need for license reactivation can also be triggered by a significant change to the computer hardware or network identity. This occurs because each time a stand-alone product is launched, the system checks a number of attributes of the computer and compares these with values in the trusted storage file.

Some of the values compared are as follows:

  • Hard disk or file system
  • Display or graphics card
  • BIOS serial number and version
  • CPU information
  • RAM size
  • Network card address

Some changes to these values are tolerated, but a major change results in a validation failure, and the license must be reactivated. So a change such as replacement of a hard drive or network card can require license reactivation. To prevent a validation failure when changing hardware, use the License Transfer Utility to export the license from the computer before the change, and then import the license back to the computer after the change.

License Transfer

You can transfer a stand-alone product license from one computer to another on either a temporary or permanent basis. A common use of the temporary transfer is when you want to run products on a portable computer while traveling. The License Transfer Utility is used to handle the transfer of licenses for both products and suites. The process involves exporting a license online from the first computer to an Autodesk server, then importing the license to the second computer.

Important: To transfer a license, the Autodesk product or suite must be installed on both computers. In addition, you need an Internet connection, and an Autodesk user ID and password, available from Autodesk Register Once.

Note: The LTU is only available with 2010 and later products. For 2009 or earlier versions of products, use the Portable License Utility instead.

Transferring your license online consists of two steps: exporting your license and importing your license.

Online License Transfer in Autodesk 2010 Products

Exporting your License

To export your license from your computer to the online Autodesk server:

  1. Launch the License Transfer Utility: Windows: The LTU shortcut can be found in the Start menu, in the same folder as the Autodesk product you want to transfer.
Mac: The LTU application can be found in the same folder as the Autodesk product you want to transfer.
Note: The LTU is product-specific. You cannot use the LTU from one product to transfer the license for another product.

  2. Click Sign in…

  3. Enter your Autodesk ID and password and then click Login.

  4. Choose whether to export your license publicly or privately and then click Export:

Private Export – This is the default method and restricts the license import to your Autodesk ID to ensure it is not transferred to another person.  Private exports automatically become public if not imported within 14 days.

Public Export – This method means your license can be transferred to someone else running the same product and serial number, such as another user in the same company. To use this method, check “Make the license available as a public import”.

  5. The License Export Confirmation, indicates that your license has successfully exported to the Autodesk online server. Print the page for your records and click Finish.

Importing your License

Once you've exported your license, you'll need to import it to your new computer:

  1. Make sure the same Autodesk product is installed on your new computer and then navigate to the License Transfer Utility you used to export your license.  See Step 1 under Export Your License.

  2. Click Sign in…>

  3. Enter your Autodesk ID and password and click Login.

  4. The License Import Confirmation page indicates that your license has successfully imported to your new computer. Print the page for your records and click Finish.

Note: There is no limit to the number of times you can use the LTU to transfer your Autodesk license; however, please read your Software License Agreement to make sure you are not exceeding the number of allowed installations for your Autodesk product.

If you can't find the LTU, your product may not support OLT or the LTU hasn't yet been installed with your product.  While the LTU is installed by default, it is an optional component which can be de-selected in the product installer.

If your system is down or if you otherwise can't access the LTU, you can contact us for assistance.

Transfer FAQ

Frequently asked questions about transferring stand-alone licenses online.

What is Online License Transfer?

Online License Transfer (OLT) is a feature that uses the License Transfer Utility (LTU) to move an active stand-alone license to another computer over the Internet. The LTU exports your license and “parks” it on Autodesk servers. Once a license has been exported, the product is disabled on the exporting computer.  You can then import your license onto another machine and activate an installation of the same product and serial number.

The LTU should also be used to export a license before upgrading to a new operating system, in which case the license will be exported and then imported onto the same machine after the operating system upgrade is complete.

How do I transfer my license?

For a step-by-step walkthrough, see Transferring Stand-Alone Licenses Online.

When should I transfer my license?

The most common situations for transferring a license are before upgrading to a new Operating System or to a new machine.  The product license should always be exported first before any kind of upgrade is initiated.

Which product versions use the LTU?

The LTU (License Transfer Utility) is only available with our 2010 and later products. If you're using a 2009 or earlier version, you need to use the Portable License Utility instead.

Can I run the LTU from within my Autodesk product?

No. The LTU is a standalone application and cannot be run from within your product. It can be found in the Start menu for the Autodesk product you want to transfer.

Note: The LTU can only transfer previously activated licenses of the same Autodesk product and serial number. For example, you can’t export a license from Revit Architecture 2013 and import it into AutoCAD 2013. Similarly, you can’t export a license from one serial number of AutoCAD 2013 and import it into a different serial number of AutoCAD 2013.

How often may I use the License Transfer Utility?

There is no limit on how many times you can export and import your license; however, you cannot export more licenses than you actually own.

My Autodesk product is installed on two machines (home and work), can I export a license for each?

No.  While some Autodesk products allow installation on a home and work machine, you can only export the number of licenses you actually own.

Can you set a time limit for publicly exported licenses?

No, it is not possible to set a time limit for an exported license. Once an exported license has been imported to another machine, it remains there until exported again.

Which license types does the LTU work with?

The LTU only works with Stand-Alone and Multi-Seat Stand-Alone licenses.  It does not work with Network licenses, which continue to use the license borrowing feature.

What happens if I don't export my license before making changes to my system?

Replacing or reconfiguring hardware on your computer before exporting your license can cause your license to be invalidated, meaning you will have to reactivate your product before using it again.  For more information, read our Product Reactivation FAQ.

What happens if a person leaves the company prior to importing a privately exported license?

Privately exported licenses will automatically convert to public export status if they are not imported within 14 days. This is a fixed time period and cannot be adjusted.

I don’t want my users to export licenses. Can I prevent this?

Yes. For most products, you can choose not to install the LTU from the main product installer. You may also omit the LTU from deployments. If you are running Windows you can also remove the LTU by choosing to modify your installation in Control Panel.

Is there an offline method for transferring my license?

No, an Internet connection is required to export or import a license. There is no alternative method for transferring stand-alone licenses.

What port is used by the LTU for transfer communication?

Port 443 (SSL); the same port as used by Register Today.

Portable License Utility

The Portable License Utility (PLU) is a utility that enables you to check out a license from one stand-alone software-locked Autodesk product and use that license on another computer that has the same Autodesk product (and installation type) installed.

Note: The Portable License Utility is for 2009 product versions or older.

A common misconception about the PLU is that it can be used to check out a license from a network-licensed Autodesk product for use on another computer. Licenses for network-licensed products are managed by the Autodesk® Network License Manager (FLEXnet).  These network licenses cannot be accessed by the PLU. The PLU works only with standalone software-locked products that use Autodesk Product Activation technology.

Prior to AutoCAD 2005, the distribution of PLU-enabled Autodesk products was limited to software-locked products outside the continental United States.

Starting with the 2010 product releases the PLU is no longer available and stand-alone licenses can now be transferred using the License Transfer Utility.

Preventing License Errors

The stand-alone licensing process regularly verifies some identifying data about the host computer, such as the hard drive, graphics card, network card address, and RAM size. Routine computer maintenance activities that change this data must be conducted carefully to avoid causing license errors.

Some license errors require you to re-activate your product. In this case, the Product Activation wizard is displayed when you try to run the product, and provides instructions for product activation.

The topics in this section can help you prevent some common license errors.

Preserving a License When Hardware Changes

If you replace or reconfigure hardware on the computer where your Autodesk product license resides, the stand-alone license might fail, with the result that you will not be able to use your product.

To prevent damage to your product license, use the License Transfer Utility to export your license file before changing the hardware. After the hardware change, you can import the license file back onto the computer.

Note: If you get a license error when you change your hardware, you may have to reactivate your license.

System Date and Time License Errors

Your product license allows for time changes to the system clock within two days of the current time. If you set your system clock back or forward more than two days, the next time you start your product, you will see a reminder to correct the system clock. If you do not correct the system clock, you receive a license error.

To prevent a license error, ensure that the system date and time on your computer are accurate when you install and activate your Autodesk product.

Preserving a License When Distributing Products

You can use the installer's Create Deployment option to create a product installation image on your server, and make it available on your computer network. During creation of this image, you are prompted for registration information, which is stored with the image and deployed to all product installations. For more information, see the Network Administration & Licensing.

You can manually distribute the software using the installation media for your Autodesk product. However, if your computers do not have an Internet connection, make sure that the registration data for each computer matches exactly. Inconsistent registration data can cause activation failures. Note: The distribution of applications using “ghosting” is not recommended. It can result in incomplete installations and activation problems.

Preserving a License On a Re-imaged Computer

For a stand-alone license, you need to export the license before re-imaging the computer. You can use the License Transfer Utility to export the license to the Autodesk server. After the re-imaging, import the license to the correct computer.

On a network license server, licenses are maintained on the server. No additional steps are needed to preserve network licenses.

Restoring Access to a Term License

The most common reasons for being denied access to a term-licensed Autodesk product are as follows:

  • The user ID you entered does not represent an authorized user. To change or check permissions, see your license administrator. Other options in this situation are to enter the user ID for an authorized user, or to enter a different serial number that associates the user ID with a valid contract.

  • The term contract has expired. To extend your contract, see your license administrator. Another option in this situation is to enter a different serial number that associates your user ID with a valid contract.

Product Keys for 2011 Products

Product keys are required for installation of Autodesk products and are used to differentiate products that are both sold independently and as part of a product suite. For example, installing AutoCAD 2011 as a point product requires product key 001C1, but installing AutoCAD 2011 from the AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite 2011 requires product key 241C1. The same version of AutoCAD is in both software packages but the product key differentiates one package from the other.

Note: Please ensure you are using the correct product key for the Autodesk product and version you are installing. Entering an incorrect product key will result in activation errors for that product.
